30 “Made In Cameroon” Promoters Trained On Packaging, Labeling & Barcodes

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

Thirty promoters of “Made in Cameroon” products have acquired valuable skills in packaging, labeling, and barcodes. This knowledge was gained through a training workshop held on April 25 in Yaoundé, chaired by Mirabel Nkemboh Nji, Director of Internal Trade at the Ministry of Trade.

The Ministry of Trade, in collaboration with GS1 Cameroon, organized the workshop with the objective of equipping promoters with crucial knowledge in packaging, labeling, and barcodes. This initiative aligns with the government’s goals of transforming Cameroon into an emerging nation by 2035.

During the workshop, Nkemboh Nji highlighted the critical importance of Cameroonian products gaining access to local, sub-regional, regional, and international markets. She emphasized that consumer acceptance is the key to achieving this market access.

Nkemboh Nji expressed concern about the limited access faced by Cameroonian SMEs, attributing it largely to inadequate production processes and non-compliance with standards. Proposed solutions included strengthening the capacity of SMEs and fostering economic patriotism.

Cameroon aspires to become an industrialized nation, with a strategic focus on significantly increasing the private sector’s contribution to economic growth. This strategy places particular emphasis on the development of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Packaging serves as a product’s showcase, playing a pivotal role in influencing consumer purchasing decisions. Effective labeling, on the other hand, is an essential tool for safeguarding public health and deterring fraudulent practices. Barcodes, meanwhile, provide a fast and efficient method for item identification, stock management, and price display.

By equipping promoters with these crucial skills, the Ministry of Trade and GS1 Cameroon are empowering Cameroonian businesses to compete more effectively in the marketplace. This not only benefits the businesses themselves but also contributes to the country’s overall economic development.

Eugene Ndi, Chapter President, urged journalists on May 2nd during the launch ceremony, where members actively participated in cleaning streets within Yaoundé. The 2024 is celebrated under the theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.”

“Journalists play a crucial role in advocating for change, and when you advocate for change, you should be part of the change,” Ndi stated. “This year’s WPFD theme focuses on the environment, and there could not have been a better way to launch our activities than what we have done today.”

Recognizing Yaoundé as a city facing significant sanitation challenges, the Chapter President emphasized that journalists advocating for a cleaner city should themselves contribute to the solution through volunteerism.

“We are leading by example, which is why we decided to carry out this clean-up exercise,” he said. “If we are calling on authorities to address the environmental crisis, we should demonstrate that volunteerism is another way to solve it, and that is what we did today.”

The clean-up took place in Yaoundé XI Municipality, specifically along the street from Rond Point Express through Acacia Market to the Sub-Divisional Office’s premises.

On May 3rd, CAMASEJ Yaoundé Chapter will organize a panel discussion exploring the theme and how journalists can leverage the 2024 WPFD theme to write impactful stories and advocate for change. Additionally, a symbolic tree planting ceremony will be held at the headquarters of The Guardian Post, contributing to environmental protection efforts.

She also acknowledged the strides taken by management to ensure a positive work environment, while also addressing the concerning trend of employees disregarding internal rules and displaying a lack of discipline.

“Many are guilty of disregarding our rules and standards. From basic requirements like wearing a badge, which is mandatory, to following the dress code,” she said.

The General Manager stated that, “With some staff increasingly becoming provocative in their dressing, absenteeism is taking root, with some staff hiding behind fancily bed rest restrictions, which will henceforth be thoroughly scrutinized by company doctors. Theft of equipment is on the rise, and severe sanctions will unfortunately be applied to anyone found guilty.”

To address these issues, which she stated were numerous, she said the staff have to make a commitment to cultivate a culture of responsibility and mutual respect in which everyone feels valued and supported in their work. For this to happen, everyone has to adhere to company policy, respect established procedures, and treat colleagues with dignity and courtesy.

“Therefore, dear colleagues, as we take time today to celebrate and reflect, I urge you to renew your commitment to our shared vision, values, and mission,” she emphasized. “Together, we can overcome obstacles, achieve our aspirations, and continue to write CAMTEL’s success story for posterity.”

It’s important to note that the International Labour Day celebrations were preceded by a week of activities, culminating in a match pass along the 20th May Boulevard. This global event, originating in 1890, serves as a day to recognize workers and advocate for social dialogue, decent work conditions, and social progress.

Five Teams On Brink As Elite One Relegation Showdown intensifies

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

Five teams are on the brink of being relegated to the Second Division Championship as the 11th day of play kicks off this Thursday, May 2. With tensions running high and everything on the line, the relegation battle has reached a fever pitch as the bottom-placed teams teeter on the edge of demotion.

Bamboutos FC

In the upcoming matches at the Ngoa-Ekelle Stadium, two intense clashes are on the program. Union of Douala will face Fovu of Baham in the first match, while AS Fortuna will confront Bamboutos of Mbouda in a must-watch game.

Union may not have any stakes involved in the game, but a victory would secure them a comfortable position as they currently sit second in the Play Offs Down classification table with 16 points.

Fovu, on the other hand, has been condemned to the Second Division as they languish at the bottom of the classification table with just six points after nine matchdays, having suffered five defeats along with three draws and a solitary victory.

The second game poses a challenge for Bamboutos of Mbouda, who must fight hard to avoid slipping into the relegation zone. While facing the current leaders will be a daunting task, they must secure a win to safeguard their position in the table and steer clear of the relegation red zone.

Currently at the sixth position with 12 points, a victory would propel them to fifth place with 15 points, depending on the outcome of other game.s AS Fortuna comfortably leads the classification table with 18 points, and a win would extend their lead to 21 points.

Over at the Yaounde Omnisport Annex I stadium, Fauve Azur is set to clash with Apejes of Mfou. While Fauve Azur occupies the third spot in the classification table, Apejes sits at the seventh position with 11 points in the red zone. A win for the Yaounde-based team, Apejes, could lift them out of the relegation zone.

The 11th matchday will however set the tone for which teams remain in the Elite One Championship and which teams are relegated to the Second Division Championship. UMS of Loum, Aigle Royal of Menoua, Avion FC of Nkam, and Fovu already know their fate as potential Division Two teams unless a miraculous turnaround occurs.

As the drama is getting set to unfolds in the different pitch, fans are expecting thrilling encounters, intense rivalries, and heart-stopping moments as the battle for survival in the Elite One Championship reaches its climax.

In two different sessions, stakeholders examined regional integration and digital development as well as regional integration and digital interconnection. The seven-presentations included among others the role of ICTs in modern diplomacy and regional integration as well as cybersecurity and defense of economic and strategic interests.

During the opening ceremony, Judith Yah Sunday épse Achidi, Director-General of CAMTEL, highlighted the significance of the event, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of CAMTEL and the 15th edition of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) Day.

She emphasized the pivotal role of CEMAC in facilitating trade across Africa and underlined the potential of digital technology and interconnection to address economic transformation challenges within the sub-region.

She added, “Our vision is to make CAMTEL a hub of digital transformation in the sub region, so it was important for us on this day to call on all the actor in the sector and subsector so that we can exchange avenues and ways to arrive at and see how far we have gone already.”

Pierre-Guillanume Boum Bissai, the resident representative of the CEMAC Commission in Cameroon, painted the importance of reflecting on CEMAC’s achievements in integration, particularly in the telecommunications and digital transformation sectors, as part of the organization’s 30th-anniversary celebrations. He acknowledged CAMTEL’s role as a leading company in the sub-region in these areas.

The CAMTEL Diplomacy and Sub-Regional Integration Day follows a series of events that has taken place marking the 25th anniversary of CAMTEL. These include CAMTEL Digital Day, CAMTEL Digital Infrastructure Day, CAMTEL Decentralisation Day, CAMTEL Youth Day, and CAMTEL Women’s Day. These events aimed to explore the contribution of digital technologies and ICTs to Cameroon’s structural transformation objectives.

In the same vein, Congo, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic have been working on developing optical fiber interconnection between the countries through the Central African Backbone (CAB) Project since May 2022.

Officials pose for a family picture (Photo Credit: CAMTEL)

In recent years, digital interconnection has advanced in the sub-region, particularly through the expansion of optical fiber networks and the growth of the digital economy. An example of this is the interconnection, starting in July 2021, of the electronic communications networks of Cameroon and Gabon. This was achieved through the installation of a 96-strand G652 optical fiber cable, spanning underground from Kye-Ossi in Cameroon to Bitam in Gabon, covering a distance of 22 km. This development has brought significant benefits to the economies of both countries.

In terms of interconnection, access, and transport infrastructure-sharing, a catalogue has been established that includes international supply via four submarine cable exits and three landing stations.

The submarine cables in question are: the WACS cable at Batoke (Limbe), connecting Cameroon to various countries on the West African coast and to Europe; the SAT3 cable, with a landing point in Douala, providing an alternative route to Europe and Asia via South Africa; the NCSCS cable in Kribi, linking Cameroon to Nigeria; and the SAIL cable, connecting Kribi to Fortaleza in Brazil, enabling interconnection between Africa and the Americas.

The illegal gas drilling site, situated in the Odza neighborhood, was dismantled after reports were made to the Ministry of Commerce. The investigation revealed a widespread dissatisfaction among consumers who were unknowingly facing a conundrum.

According to officials who went to the sit, the brand “Pleingaz” from the company Infotech S.A was found to be refilling gas bottles of its competitors, manipulating charges to the detriment of consumers and causing significant harm.

Captain Marie Bernard Nyangono, Head of the Judicial Investigation Service of the First Gendarmerie Region in Yaoundé, noted that defectively conditioned domestic gas cylinders were discovered, posing major risks to consumers.

Moreover, the lack of proper pictograms on transport vehicles was found to be in violation of safety standards. The officials of the center have been arrested, and an investigation has been initiated at the Yaounde First Region Police Force.

It is crucial to highlight that domestic gas, essential for households, receives state subsidies, with each bottle purchased benefiting from a state contribution of FCFA 4,713.
