Cameroon will set their sights on extending their lead when they face Angola on June 11th. Meanwhile, Cape Verde faces a crucial match against Libya in a must-win encounter to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The clash between Mauritius and Eswatini will determine who remains rooted to the bottom of the group.

Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers: FECAFOOT Clarifies Position, Pledges Openness In Serving National Interests

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

The Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, through its President, Samuel Eto’o, has send a letter to the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, MINSEP, Prof. Narcisse Mouelle Kombi clarifying misunderstandings surrounding the National Team in a letter sent to the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, MINSEP.

In a letter dated June 4 and sent to Prof. Mouelle Kombi, Eto’o draws Minister’s attention to the progress that has been made. He states that the federation, as usual, had taken steps such as issuing plane tickets to selected players, reserving hotel rooms, arranging airport shuttle logistics, inventorying equipment necessary for the match preparation phase, and holding preparatory meetings with the Coach.

Other actions included securing the availability of tickets, exchanging correspondence with the sister Federations of Cape Verde and Angola, sending summons to the clubs for the various players selected, and liaising with the various administrations providing support within the framework of the Cape Verde meeting (the SED, the DGSN, the Governor of the Central Region, etc.).

However, during a meeting on June 2, Eto;o said, Marc Brys, coach of the Indomitable Lions, unilaterally decided to modify the administrative and technical management of the Indomitable Lions appointed by the Executive Committee on May 8, 2024.

Despite taking all necessary measures to ensure a smooth arrival of players, Eto’o pointed out that FECAFOOT officials present at the Hilton Hotel to received players suffered a series of intimidations and threats with the collaboration of the Law Enforcement Forces who were present in large numbers with very specific instructions.

When the Federation employees were forced out of the Hilton Hotel, Eto’o noted that they had no choice but to take all the equipment necessary for the successful completion of the training camp to keep it safe at FECAFOOT headquarters.

“Indeed, it could not be deployed due to animosity and reversals of the Coach,” Eto’o wrote in the letter. “Nevertheless, the Federation remains available to provide the necessary equipment and materials subject to a formal written request sent to him.”

Eto’o stressed that the Federation, or the member association of FIFA or CAF, has the obligation to manage officials designated by FIFA or CAF for scheduled international matches. He further stated that only the members of the Technical Management appointed by the FECAFOOT Executive Committee are recognized by FIFA and authorized to receive the necessary accreditations.

“Mr. Minister, we would like to reiterate to you that an official international match between two Associations is organized by the Federation of the host Association, under the supervision of FIFA or CAF,” the letter stated.

It is important to note that FECAFOOT and MINSEP have been in disagreement since April 30. FECAFOOT has been contesting the technical list appointed by MINSEP, indicating that it has the right to do so as per the Presidential Decree of 2014.

MINSEP, however, argues that the 2015 Convention signed between the two parties gives the State the obligation to appoint the technical staff of FECAFOOT. MINSEP also cites the President’s Speech delivered on February 10, which indicated that instructions had been given to MINSEP to organize the national team given t poor outings in international competitions.

Despite the ongoing dispute, the Lions are currently in training camp for the upcoming matches against Cape Verde on June 8 and Angola on June 11. These matches count towards the third and fourth day of play in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

However, Patrick Maswanganyi equalized for Pirates from the penalty spot with 11th minutes later.

Substitute Relebohile Mofokeng emerged as the hero for the Buccaneers, scoring the winning goal in the 94th minute at the stoppage time.

“Football can be very cruel, can it!? We miss a penalty, they get a penalty, they score, they equalize, but we dominate the game and then there is this free-kick that I don’t even think should be going that way.”

“But okay, it’s what cup finals are all about, congratulations to Pirates. We take the lesson and we move on,’ he added.”

Souaibou Marou joined Orlando Pirates FC in 2023 after scoring an impressive 39 goals in two seasons for Cameroonian team Coton Sport. He was also part of Cameroon’s 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar.

Samuel Eto’o (Second from Right) Speaking during the press briefing

The Ministry of Sports and Physical Education (MINSEP) and the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) have reached an agreement on the Lions’ technical staff.

This public dispute had raised concerns about the team’s preparation for upcoming World Cup qualifying matches on June 8 and 11.

However, a May 30th press conference at FECAFOOT headquarters in Yaounde brought together Samuel Eto’o (FECAFOOT President), Marc Brys (proposed coach), and Michel Dissake Mbarga (representing the Sports Minister). The outcome? Green lights for all parties.

FECAFOOT’s official communique confirmed Marc Brys as the Indomitable Lions’ head coach. Notably, deputies Martin Ndtoungou Mpile and David Pagou, who interestingly, had previously resigned from their positions, rejoined the team.

At Douala Outreach: SPF Offers Skills Training, Health Screenings For Widows & Orphans

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

Sustaining Peace Foundation (SPF) has held a targeted outreach program in Douala aimed at empowering widows and orphans.

Health officials conducting health screening

Held over two days (May 25th-26th) at the Barean Baptist Church Kotto, the program provided participants with valuable skills training that can generate income. Additionally, SPF offered comprehensive health screenings, testing for a variety of diseases to ensure the well-being of the community.

Linda Kanjo Kekwi, CEO of SPF, speaking after the event expressed her delight at the program’s turnout and positive outcomes.  She highlighted that this outreach followed a similar event held three years ago at the same location.

“While the program was dedicated to widows and orphans,” Kanjo Kekwi explained, “I’m happy to see internally displaced persons and others participating, especially during the health screenings.”

Kanjo Kekwi emphasized the importance of community building. “Seeing people genuinely happy motivates me greatly,” she stated. “This is my way of contributing to a stronger Douala and Cameroon as a whole.”

The skills acquisition training focused on practical income-generating activities, including production of powdered soap, soybean products, petroleum jelly, and rubbing alcohol.

The outreach program also offered comprehensive health screenings. A total of 70 individuals received testing for malaria, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B and C, H-Pylori, and other health concerns.

Building on this success, SPF is planning a Widows’ Summit in June, coinciding with International Widows’ Day.The outreach program comes on the heels of the recent launch of SPF’s Skills and Habilitation Center in Yaoundé on April 13th. This center provides ongoing support to widows and orphans facing challenges related to trauma, health issues, lack of skills development, and human rights abuses.

“Sustainable Peace Foundation is here to build peace through empowerment,” declared Kanjo Kekwi. “Our Skills and Habilitation Center addresses the issues we’ve encountered while working with vulnerable populations across Cameroon.”

According to her, “Positive peace is a powerful driver of change in developing societies fostering sustainable prosperity and a lasting peace.”

This is the substances of a one-day event, held on May 29 in Yaoundé. The event was chaired by Judith Yah Sunday epse Achidi, Director General of CAMTEL. Representatives from government, private institutions, and partners also participated.

The event, dubbed “CAMTEL Digital Sovereignty Day,” centered around the theme “Digital Sovereignty: Strategic Challenges in the Transformation of Cameroon’s Economy.”

During the opening session, Judith Yah Sunday emphasized that this day serves as an opportunity for the national telecommunications operator to contribute to Cameroon’s digital sovereignty. “The goal is to facilitate the structural transformation of the country’s economy.”

She added that, Cameroon faces a dual challenge: rapid industrialization and integration into the dynamics of information and communication technologies.

To address this, she further said, the event aimed to provide insights for regulating the actions of contemporary technological giants while ensuring technological catch-up. to her, achieving this balance is crucial to avoid dependence on external forces.

Judith Yah Sunday said, “CAMTEL being the arm of the government in terms of telecommunications is important that we sit down with all the stakeholders and discuss what is the relevant activities that CAMTEL should put in place in other to secure cyber space and internet governance in the country.”

Given the presence of multinational corporations like Google and Facebook, protecting Cameroon’s cyberspace is critical, she said, ensuring the safety of citizen data related to the economy and population is a strategic priority. “The challenge lies in developing effective strategies to safeguard this data.”

Given that on a global scale, the domination of cyber space is virtually ensured by a certain number of multinationals which exercise a profound influence there, the Director General stated that the dependence of users (States, public administrations, private organizations, individuals) on them continues to grow over the years.

“The resulting predominance of a ‘monoculture’ of digital tools raises strategic, economic, political and ethical issues, particularly regarding the need to control the strategic assets that are data,” she said.

The event featured presentations and roundtable discussions on various aspects of digital sovereignty. Presentations included “Digital Sovereignty: Stakes and Challenges in the Era of Digital Development and Context of NDS30” and “Digitalisation of Public Administration Services in Cameroon: State of Play and Prospects.”

These events included CAMTEL Digital Day, CAMTEL Decentralisation Day, CAMTEL Digital Infrastructure Day, CAMTEL Youth Day, CAMTEL Women’s Day, CAMTEL Diplomacy and Regional Integration Day, and CAMTEL Business Day among others.
