Prof. Maurice Kamto, President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM), has strongly condemned the abandonment of Cameroonian victims buried in the Dschang Cliff landslide in the West Region.
In a press conference on November 8 in Yaounde, Kamto questioned the prolonged silence of President Paul Biya following tragic events in the country.
“Where is the President of the Republic?…Why has he not uttered a word, issued a statement several days after this tragedy?” he asked.
Kamto criticized the government’s response, highlighting their apparent indifference towards the suffering of the people. He pointed out that while the government celebrated the 42nd anniversary of the CPDM’s accession to power, victims of the landslide were left to their fate.
“The silence of the Head of State in the face of this tragedy, where dozens of his compatriots have been buried for days, is unacceptable,” Kamto asserted.
The CRM leader also drew attention to the government’s consistent failure to address numerous crises, including the Boko Haram insurgency, the Anglophone crisis, and various natural disasters. “It is always very well to send words of comfort to other countries, but we never receive comfort from others because our leaders behave as if the tragedies that strike Cameroon don’t concern them,” he lamented.
Kamto called for urgent government intervention to evacuate the entire area and allow only trained professionals to handle the situation. He emphasized the need to hold accountable those responsible for the negligence that led to the disaster, stating, “Impunity always breeds irresponsibility.”
