Five Teams On Brink As Elite One Relegation Showdown intensifies

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

Five teams are on the brink of being relegated to the Second Division Championship as the 11th day of play kicks off this Thursday, May 2. With tensions running high and everything on the line, the relegation battle has reached a fever pitch as the bottom-placed teams teeter on the edge of demotion.

Bamboutos FC

In the upcoming matches at the Ngoa-Ekelle Stadium, two intense clashes are on the program. Union of Douala will face Fovu of Baham in the first match, while AS Fortuna will confront Bamboutos of Mbouda in a must-watch game.

Union may not have any stakes involved in the game, but a victory would secure them a comfortable position as they currently sit second in the Play Offs Down classification table with 16 points.

Fovu, on the other hand, has been condemned to the Second Division as they languish at the bottom of the classification table with just six points after nine matchdays, having suffered five defeats along with three draws and a solitary victory.

The second game poses a challenge for Bamboutos of Mbouda, who must fight hard to avoid slipping into the relegation zone. While facing the current leaders will be a daunting task, they must secure a win to safeguard their position in the table and steer clear of the relegation red zone.

Currently at the sixth position with 12 points, a victory would propel them to fifth place with 15 points, depending on the outcome of other game.s AS Fortuna comfortably leads the classification table with 18 points, and a win would extend their lead to 21 points.

Over at the Yaounde Omnisport Annex I stadium, Fauve Azur is set to clash with Apejes of Mfou. While Fauve Azur occupies the third spot in the classification table, Apejes sits at the seventh position with 11 points in the red zone. A win for the Yaounde-based team, Apejes, could lift them out of the relegation zone.

The 11th matchday will however set the tone for which teams remain in the Elite One Championship and which teams are relegated to the Second Division Championship. UMS of Loum, Aigle Royal of Menoua, Avion FC of Nkam, and Fovu already know their fate as potential Division Two teams unless a miraculous turnaround occurs.

As the drama is getting set to unfolds in the different pitch, fans are expecting thrilling encounters, intense rivalries, and heart-stopping moments as the battle for survival in the Elite One Championship reaches its climax.

CAMTEL, Experts Explore Digital Economy Solutions For Sub-Regional Integration

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) and experts have explored innovative solutions aimed at bolstering sub-regional integration through leveraging the digital economy.

The discussions took place during a one-day event held on April 29 in Yaounde, dubbed “CAMTEL Diplomacy and Sub-Regional Integration (CEMAC) Day.” The event took place on the theme, “International Digital Cooperation, Sub-regional Integration, and the Structural Transformation of Cameroon’s Economy.”

In two different sessions, stakeholders examined regional integration and digital development as well as regional integration and digital interconnection. The seven-presentations included among others the role of ICTs in modern diplomacy and regional integration as well as cybersecurity and defense of economic and strategic interests.

During the opening ceremony, Judith Yah Sunday épse Achidi, Director-General of CAMTEL, highlighted the significance of the event, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of CAMTEL and the 15th edition of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) Day.

She emphasized the pivotal role of CEMAC in facilitating trade across Africa and underlined the potential of digital technology and interconnection to address economic transformation challenges within the sub-region.

She added, “Our vision is to make CAMTEL a hub of digital transformation in the sub region, so it was important for us on this day to call on all the actor in the sector and subsector so that we can exchange avenues and ways to arrive at and see how far we have gone already.”

Pierre-Guillanume Boum Bissai, the resident representative of the CEMAC Commission in Cameroon, painted the importance of reflecting on CEMAC’s achievements in integration, particularly in the telecommunications and digital transformation sectors, as part of the organization’s 30th-anniversary celebrations. He acknowledged CAMTEL’s role as a leading company in the sub-region in these areas.

The CAMTEL Diplomacy and Sub-Regional Integration Day follows a series of events that has taken place marking the 25th anniversary of CAMTEL. These include CAMTEL Digital Day, CAMTEL Digital Infrastructure Day, CAMTEL Decentralisation Day, CAMTEL Youth Day, and CAMTEL Women’s Day. These events aimed to explore the contribution of digital technologies and ICTs to Cameroon’s structural transformation objectives.

In the same vein, Congo, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic have been working on developing optical fiber interconnection between the countries through the Central African Backbone (CAB) Project since May 2022.

Officials pose for a family picture (Photo Credit: CAMTEL)

In recent years, digital interconnection has advanced in the sub-region, particularly through the expansion of optical fiber networks and the growth of the digital economy. An example of this is the interconnection, starting in July 2021, of the electronic communications networks of Cameroon and Gabon. This was achieved through the installation of a 96-strand G652 optical fiber cable, spanning underground from Kye-Ossi in Cameroon to Bitam in Gabon, covering a distance of 22 km. This development has brought significant benefits to the economies of both countries.

In terms of interconnection, access, and transport infrastructure-sharing, a catalogue has been established that includes international supply via four submarine cable exits and three landing stations.

The submarine cables in question are: the WACS cable at Batoke (Limbe), connecting Cameroon to various countries on the West African coast and to Europe; the SAT3 cable, with a landing point in Douala, providing an alternative route to Europe and Asia via South Africa; the NCSCS cable in Kribi, linking Cameroon to Nigeria; and the SAIL cable, connecting Kribi to Fortaleza in Brazil, enabling interconnection between Africa and the Americas.

The friendly encounter took place on April 27 at the Yaounde Military Stadium. The match not only showcased friendly sportsmanship but also served as a platform for fostering closer ties between the two entities.

Speaking shortly after the match, US Ambassador to Cameroon, H.E Christopher J. Lamora, expressed appreciation for the camaraderie displayed during the encounter.

He stressed that beyond the game’s outcome, the focus was on building a sense of community between the Embassy and the Yaounde II Council.

“It’s been a great game, but the final score isn’t important. We are building friendship and camaraderie,” Lamora remarked. “It is a friendly match, and we are connecting with the community. That’s what truly matters.”

The Mayor of Yaounde II, Yannick Martial Ayissi Eloundou, highlighted that the match, held ahead of the upcoming Labour Day celebrations, provided an opportunity to celebrate with their neighbor, the US Embassy located in the Yaounde II municipality.

He described the match as a collaborative effort that would strengthen relationships between the collaborators and foster mutual understanding between Cameroon and the United States of America.

“This match is a celebration of friendship and collaboration,” he stated, “It strengthens ties between our local government and the U.S. Embassy, as well as between Cameroon and the United States.”

At the end of the game, the Striking Eagles of the US Embassy secured a convincing 6-1 victory over Yaounde II. The Embassy’s team scored four goals in the first half and added two more in the second half, with Yaounde II managing to reduce the deficit through a penalty.

A Fraudulent Domestic Gas Dumping Center Shut down In Yaounde

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

A fraudulent domestic gas dumping center has been shut down in Yaounde following a joint operation led by the Ministry of Commerce and the National Gendarmerie service on April 17.

The illegal gas drilling site, situated in the Odza neighborhood, was dismantled after reports were made to the Ministry of Commerce. The investigation revealed a widespread dissatisfaction among consumers who were unknowingly facing a conundrum.

According to officials who went to the sit, the brand “Pleingaz” from the company Infotech S.A was found to be refilling gas bottles of its competitors, manipulating charges to the detriment of consumers and causing significant harm.

Captain Marie Bernard Nyangono, Head of the Judicial Investigation Service of the First Gendarmerie Region in Yaoundé, noted that defectively conditioned domestic gas cylinders were discovered, posing major risks to consumers.

Moreover, the lack of proper pictograms on transport vehicles was found to be in violation of safety standards. The officials of the center have been arrested, and an investigation has been initiated at the Yaounde First Region Police Force.

It is crucial to highlight that domestic gas, essential for households, receives state subsidies, with each bottle purchased benefiting from a state contribution of FCFA 4,713.
