Indomitable Lion’s Technical Team Confirmed After FECAFOOT, MINSEP Resolve Dispute

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

A month-long disagreement and uncertainty surrounding the Cameroon national football team, the Indomitable Lions, have finally come to an end.

Samuel Eto’o (Second from Right) Speaking during the press briefing

The Ministry of Sports and Physical Education (MINSEP) and the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) have reached an agreement on the Lions’ technical staff.

This public dispute had raised concerns about the team’s preparation for upcoming World Cup qualifying matches on June 8 and 11.

However, a May 30th press conference at FECAFOOT headquarters in Yaounde brought together Samuel Eto’o (FECAFOOT President), Marc Brys (proposed coach), and Michel Dissake Mbarga (representing the Sports Minister). The outcome? Green lights for all parties.

Officials pose for a family picture after the press briefing

FECAFOOT’s official communique confirmed Marc Brys as the Indomitable Lions’ head coach. Notably, deputies Martin Ndtoungou Mpile and David Pagou, who interestingly, had previously resigned from their positions, rejoined the team.

This agreement effectively eliminates the separate coaching staff appointed by Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, Minister of Sports leaving only the Belgian coach and his two assistants. The Indomitable Lions can now move forward with a unified technical team.

At Douala Outreach: SPF Offers Skills Training, Health Screenings For Widows & Orphans

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

Sustaining Peace Foundation (SPF) has held a targeted outreach program in Douala aimed at empowering widows and orphans.

Health officials conducting health screening

Held over two days (May 25th-26th) at the Barean Baptist Church Kotto, the program provided participants with valuable skills training that can generate income. Additionally, SPF offered comprehensive health screenings, testing for a variety of diseases to ensure the well-being of the community.

Linda Kanjo Kekwi, CEO of SPF, speaking after the event expressed her delight at the program’s turnout and positive outcomes.  She highlighted that this outreach followed a similar event held three years ago at the same location.

“While the program was dedicated to widows and orphans,” Kanjo Kekwi explained, “I’m happy to see internally displaced persons and others participating, especially during the health screenings.”

Kanjo Kekwi emphasized the importance of community building. “Seeing people genuinely happy motivates me greatly,” she stated. “This is my way of contributing to a stronger Douala and Cameroon as a whole.”

The skills acquisition training focused on practical income-generating activities, including production of powdered soap, soybean products, petroleum jelly, and rubbing alcohol.

The outreach program also offered comprehensive health screenings. A total of 70 individuals received testing for malaria, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B and C, H-Pylori, and other health concerns.

Building on this success, SPF is planning a Widows’ Summit in June, coinciding with International Widows’ Day.The outreach program comes on the heels of the recent launch of SPF’s Skills and Habilitation Center in Yaoundé on April 13th. This center provides ongoing support to widows and orphans facing challenges related to trauma, health issues, lack of skills development, and human rights abuses.

“Sustainable Peace Foundation is here to build peace through empowerment,” declared Kanjo Kekwi. “Our Skills and Habilitation Center addresses the issues we’ve encountered while working with vulnerable populations across Cameroon.”

According to her, “Positive peace is a powerful driver of change in developing societies fostering sustainable prosperity and a lasting peace.”

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

This is the substances of a one-day event, held on May 29 in Yaoundé. The event was chaired by Judith Yah Sunday epse Achidi, Director General of CAMTEL. Representatives from government, private institutions, and partners also participated.

The event, dubbed “CAMTEL Digital Sovereignty Day,” centered around the theme “Digital Sovereignty: Strategic Challenges in the Transformation of Cameroon’s Economy.”

During the opening session, Judith Yah Sunday emphasized that this day serves as an opportunity for the national telecommunications operator to contribute to Cameroon’s digital sovereignty. “The goal is to facilitate the structural transformation of the country’s economy.”

She added that, Cameroon faces a dual challenge: rapid industrialization and integration into the dynamics of information and communication technologies.

To address this, she further said, the event aimed to provide insights for regulating the actions of contemporary technological giants while ensuring technological catch-up. to her, achieving this balance is crucial to avoid dependence on external forces.

Judith Yah Sunday said, “CAMTEL being the arm of the government in terms of telecommunications is important that we sit down with all the stakeholders and discuss what is the relevant activities that CAMTEL should put in place in other to secure cyber space and internet governance in the country.”

Given the presence of multinational corporations like Google and Facebook, protecting Cameroon’s cyberspace is critical, she said, ensuring the safety of citizen data related to the economy and population is a strategic priority. “The challenge lies in developing effective strategies to safeguard this data.”

Given that on a global scale, the domination of cyber space is virtually ensured by a certain number of multinationals which exercise a profound influence there, the Director General stated that the dependence of users (States, public administrations, private organizations, individuals) on them continues to grow over the years.

“The resulting predominance of a ‘monoculture’ of digital tools raises strategic, economic, political and ethical issues, particularly regarding the need to control the strategic assets that are data,” she said.

The event featured presentations and roundtable discussions on various aspects of digital sovereignty. Presentations included “Digital Sovereignty: Stakes and Challenges in the Era of Digital Development and Context of NDS30” and “Digitalisation of Public Administration Services in Cameroon: State of Play and Prospects.”

These events included CAMTEL Digital Day, CAMTEL Decentralisation Day, CAMTEL Digital Infrastructure Day, CAMTEL Youth Day, CAMTEL Women’s Day, CAMTEL Diplomacy and Regional Integration Day, and CAMTEL Business Day among others.

After Suspension Move: FECAFOOT Summons Indomitable Lions Coach, Marc Brys

By Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has summoned the Indomitable Lions’ coach, Belgian-born Marc Brys. The summon is contained in a communique made public on May 24 by FECAFOOT Secretary General, Blaise Djounang.

According to the communique, Brys is expected to report to FECAFOOT headquarters on Tuesday, May 28th, at 9:00 AM.

“We kindly request your participation in a working session to be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, starting at 9:00 AM at the headquarters of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) located in Tsinga,” reads the communique.

Agenda Unclear, But Recent Controversy Likely Topic

While the official agenda remains undisclosed, sports fans speculate that the recent ruling regarding the team’s assistant coaches will be a central point. Additionally, the upcoming qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup are likely to be discussed.

On May 21st, the Conciliation and Arbitration Chamber of the National Olympic and Sports Committee overturned FECAFOOT’s appointments for assistant coaches. The Chamber emphasized the Ministry of Sports’ authority in national sports administration.

This ruling mandate that the Ministry’s appointed technical, administrative, and medical staff will now assist Brys. FECAFOOT, however, has expressed concern over a potential FIFA suspension due to what they perceive as “hidden interests” motivating the decision.

FECAFOOT Warns of Potential FIFA Suspension

FECAFOOT acknowledged the Court of Arbitration’s decision but expressed concerns about its adherence to legal procedures. Consequently, they suspended the appointment of Marc Brys as Cameroon national team coach.

However in a note to President of the National Olympic and Sports Committee, Col. Kalaba Malboum, Eto’o, highlighted the potential ramifications of a suspension. He argued that such an action would not only harm the athletes but also damage Cameroon’s global sporting reputation.

“Mr. President,” the note reads, “everyone in the role they play will have to face up to their responsibilities regarding the risk of suspension that we are putting our country under in favour of hidden interests in defiance of the texts taken by Mr. President of the Republic, Head of State.”

Standoff Continues Between FECAFOOT and Ministry

Since Brys’ appointment, FECAFOOT and the Ministry of Sports have been locked in a disagreement regarding the appointment of national team officials. Neither party appears willing to back down.

Cameroon faces two crucial World Cup qualifiers in June, but sports pundits warn that the ongoing standoff between the football federation and the Ministry of Sports could significantly jeopardize their chances of starting the campaign on a strong footing.
