Morocco Gears Up For Football Frenzy As CAF Announces Dates for AFCON 2025, WAFCON 2024

The Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Executive Committee has unveiled the dates for Africa’s premier football tournaments, both set to be hosted by Morocco.

The prestigious CAF TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will take center stage from Sunday, December 21st, 2025, to Sunday, January 18th, 2026.

This follows the 2024 CAF TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which kicks off on Saturday, July 5th, 2025, and culminates on Saturday, July 26th, 2025.

CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, expressed his optimism for both tournaments. He anticipates the AFCON to be a resounding success, potentially the “best in history.”

He also acknowledged the remarkable growth of women’s football on the continent, predicting a similarly successful WAFCON.

“I am also impressed by the enormous growth of Women’s Football in Africa and I am expecting the CAF TotalEnergies WAFCON Morocco 2024 to be immensely successful,” he said.

Dr. Motsepe elaborated on the complexities behind scheduling these events, citing extensive discussions due to a crowded international and domestic football calendar.

He emphasized CAF’s commitment to African players abroad and fostering strong relationships with other football confederations like UEFA and FIFA.

“We’re dedicated to elevating African football to a globally competitive level,” he declared. “Our deep gratitude goes to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), its President Fouzi Lekjaa, and the Moroccan people for hosting both the AFCON and WAFCON.”

Fouzi Lekjaa, FRMF President, pledged to make Morocco the ideal host, offering the “best conditions” for Africa and the world to experience these prestigious tournaments.

In addition to the tournament dates, the CAF Executive Committee also announced that the 46th CAF Ordinary General Assembly will be held in Kinshasa, DRC, on Thursday, October 10th, 2024.

Bidding processes have been open for hosting the CAF Women’s Champions League 2024, the U17 and U20 AFCON tournaments of 2024, and the CAF Awards 2024.

CAF also received proposals from the Middle East to host the 2024 CAF TotalEnergies Super Cup featuring Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC (Winners of the CAF TotalEnergies Champions League) and Zamalek SC (Winners of the CAF TotalEnergies Confederation Cup)
