Students from various institutions showcased their talents during the inaugural Eyang World Engineering Day (EWED), held from March 6 to 7 at the main campus in Eyang. This two-day event brought together secondary school and university students, allowing them to demonstrate their skills and creativity in the field of engineering.

After an intense competition, results were announced in different categories. JFN Hightech University Institute took first place in the Hackathons category, followed by the Catholic University Institute of Buea (CUIB) in second place, and UCAC-ICAM Institute (formerly IST-AC) in third. These university students were challenged to develop innovative projects and solutions.
In the secondary school category, 11 schools participated, divided into Francophone and Anglophone groups. In the Francophone category, Collège Jean Tabi, Fondation Kamtchoum Ndami, and Lycée Classique et Moderne de Bafoussam secured the top three positions.
Fr. Jean Herve, Director of Saint Jean University Institute, expressed his joy at the event’s success and stressed the importance of making this an annual experience. “It is crucial to raise our students’ awareness of the significant challenges in IT,” he said. “This edition highlights the central role of engineering in our country’s development.”

He added, “We need more technicians and engineers with the skills to tackle our country’s challenges. It’s concerning that many high school students are pursuing arts instead of science, especially in a developing nation like ours. For any nation that wants to develop like Cameroon, we need engineers because they are central.”
Quinne Aboh Nyah from CUIB shared expressed her satisfaction that they had less than 24 hours to create their projects.
“The exercise was tough because other schools had many brilliant ideas. I encourage girls to embrace engineering because the future is bright for women in this field. Just keep believing in yourselves!” Aboh Nyah said.
Ayukocha Awofogambang Ayuknso from Saint Benedict Catholic Bilingual College also expressed pride in the experience gained through the event. “I feel happy and accomplished. This exercise is helping me prepare to become an engineer,” she stated.

Students backed home prizes. They came from the towns of Buea, Bafoussam, Dschang, Douala, and Yaoundé participated in EWED 2025, which followed the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development celebrated on March 4, 2025.
This event focused on the vital contributions of engineering to sustainable development, inspiring the next generation of engineers to make a positive impact.
