Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya has called upon all electoral stakeholders to demonstrate maturity and responsibility as the nation prepares for pivotal elections in 2025.
In his traditional end of year speech on December 31, he emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability before, during, and after the upcoming presidential and regional elections, which are set to be significant milestones in the country’s democratic journey.
“…As in the past, these events will represent major milestones in the life of our nation. Let us take this opportunity to further strengthen our democracy,” Biya stated, urging all involved to prioritize unity and peace.
The President acknowledged the ongoing challenges many Cameroonians face in registering to vote, particularly due to the lack of national identity cards. He highlighted the issue of dual identity, but reassured citizens that necessary measures would be implemented to facilitate the registration process.
As he looked ahead to 2025, President Biya recognized the hurdles that lie ahead but expressed unwavering confidence in the nation’s ability to overcome them through unity and cohesion.
“Yes, my dear compatriots, we will, as in the past, together turn these challenges into opportunities,” he declared. “Together, we will continue to move forward with determination, in security and peace.”
He expressed gratitude for the steadfast support he has received throughout his presidency, stating, “Your trust is both an honor and a compass for my actions in steering our beloved and beautiful country.”
Biya reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Cameroon, insisting that his resolve to address the country’s challenges grows stronger each day.
Reflecting on the achievements of 2024, Biya noted progress in combating the Boko Haram threat in the Northern Regions and advancements in the reconstruction efforts in the North-West and South-West Regions, despite ongoing violence from armed groups targeting civilians.
“Cameroon will remain one and indivisible,” he asserted, underscoring that this vision aligns with the wishes of the majority.
Reiterating his dedication to national unity and peace, Biya extended an olive branch to members of armed groups, encouraging them to embrace the peace initiative and lay down their weapons.
“Hundreds of their comrades have already joined the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration Centres, gaining skills for their social integration,” he noted.
Despite a challenging global landscape marked by conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, as well as economic uncertainties, Biya reported a promising economic outlook for Cameroon.
The nation’s economy experienced a growth rate of 3.8 percent in 2024, projected to rise to 4.1 percent in 2025. He highlighted the positive impact of the integrated agro-pastoral and fisheries import-substitution plan, which aims to enhance food sovereignty and reduce trade deficits.
Biya stated among other things that various sectors are poised for growth, including agriculture, mining, electricity, roads, and education, all of which are expected to contribute to the nation’s economic development and fulfill the aspirations of its citizens.
“It is now time for me to extend to each and every one of you, my best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year 2025,” President Paul Biya said.
