Community Service Days: Youth Commit To Action For Sustainable Community Development

Youths from the conflict-affected Northwest and Southwest regions have pledged to undertake initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable community development. This commitment was made during the Community Service Days organized by Local Youth Corner, which took place from December 20 to 23 across various divisions in these regions.

Participants from Bui, Meme, Momo, and Mezam divisions stressed the vital role of community development in achieving sustainable progress.

One participant from Bamenda remarked, “Participating in the clean-up campaign at Mobile Bridge reminded me of the importance of maintaining a clean environment.

It was a fantastic opportunity to bond with fellow community members while working towards a common goal.”

Another participant stated, “Cleaning up Mobile Bridge was a rewarding experience. Witnessing the transformation of the area from littered to clean and inviting was truly inspiring. I believe more people should engage in such activities.”

Individuals living with disabilities who joined the initiative expressed gratitude for the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. They highlighted that community development requires the full participation of everyone.

Youths in Mezam Division, Northwest Region of Cameroon

In Jakiri, Bui Division, a total of 80 youths, including children and the elderly, participated in a clean-up exercise targeting several areas, including the Abawa roundabout, Mensai market, health post surroundings, and a stretch of road at Kovewong.

In Mezam Division, 61 youths engaged in cleaning efforts along Ghana Street, Cow Street, and Mobile Bridge. Meanwhile, in Meme Division, 60 participants took part in a clean-up at the Kumba High Court premises, including individuals with disabilities.

Youths in Jakiri, Bui Division, Northwest Region of Cameroon

In Momo Division specifically in Mbengwi, over 73 youths worked to clean the Mbon main market, Mbon motor park, and Mbengwi District Hospital.

The Community Service Days aim to promote community engagement and collaboration for peacebuilding, while also raising awareness about the prevention of recruiting and using children in armed conflict.

This event also seek to enhance visibility for the Vancouver Principles and underscore the importance of youth involvement in peacebuilding efforts.

Looking ahead, the Community Service Days will adopt a youth-led approach, utilizing trained trainers from the 12 subdivisions in the Northwest and Southwest regions.

These trainers will coordinate and facilitate activities within their respective divisions, supported by Local Youth Corner Cameroon.
