Mbem, a village rich in culture and history, is set to become the epicenter of athleticism and tradition this December 13th and 14th, 2024. Nestled in the rugged terrain of Nwa Subdivision in Cameroon’s Northwest Region, Mbem will host the much-anticipated Mount Majang Race, an event that attracts athletes and spectators from across the country and beyond.

With a legacy dating back to 1988, the Mount Majang Race has grown into one of Cameroon’s premier athletic competitions, blending intense sport with deep cultural heritage.

Honoring the Visionary Behind the Race

The Mount Majang Race owes its existence to the late Ta Nji Majang Bello Amos Ngaben, whose visionary dream was to showcase the village’s breathtaking natural landscape while promoting athletic excellence.

His legacy endures, and the race, which gained further prominence in 2000 when it drew the attention of then Minister of Youth and Sports, Professor Bidoum Nkpwart Ismael, continues to thrive. The event is now celebrated not only for its competitive spirit but also for fostering local talent with global potential.

A Track Record of Champions

Over the years, the Mount Majang Race has produced a host of exceptional athletes, many of whom have gone on to leave their mark internationally. Among the most notable is Godlove Gabsebuin, a five-time winner of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope (in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2020), who rose to prominence through the Mount Majang Race. Other heroes, like Konyui Joseph and Tata Carine, have also excelled.

Tata, in particular, has had remarkable success, winning multiple times at the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope between 2018 and 2023. Adamu Issa Bouba and Ngwang Catherine, winners in the male and female categories at the 2023 Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, as well as Adamu Irine (the 2024 female winner), all began their journeys at the Mount Majang Race. These athletes, among others, continue to inspire future generations.

A Celebration of Culture and Unity

The Mount Majang Race is more than just a test of endurance; it is a vibrant celebration of Mbem’s rich cultural heritage and communal unity. Alongside the grueling mountain race, the event will feature a variety of cultural activities, including horse racing, football gala matches (with both male and female teams), and traditional dance performances. These events will immerse spectators in the rich cultural fabric of the Mbem people.

A key highlight of the event is its emphasis on encouraging the education of the girl child. A special trophy, donated by Mabi Emma Monie, will be awarded to outstanding schoolgirls. In addition, musical performances by local and national artists, along with gala nights and cultural animations, will ensure that the event is as much a cultural celebration as it is an athletic contest.

Countdown to Race Day

With race day quickly approaching, the Mbem Cultural Development Association (MBECUDA)—the principal organizers and driving force behind the event—has been working tirelessly to ensure its success. Preparations are in full swing, with local authorities, security forces, and community leaders collaborating to ensure every aspect of the race runs smoothly. Trails are being marked, athletes are eagerly registering, and medical teams are on standby to handle any emergencies.

This year’s race promises to be even more competitive, with over 200 top athletes from across Cameroon expected to participate. Known for its grueling terrain and length, the Mount Majang Race is often compared to the famous Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, testing athletes both physically and mentally. For those who missed the excitement earlier in the year, the Mini Majang Race in June provided a warm-up, heightening anticipation for the main event.

Call for Recognition

While the Mount Majang Race remains a monumental achievement for the Mbem community, MBECUDA— the development arm that has succeeded in building a microelectrical project for the community—has called for greater recognition and partnership with the government to formally acknowledge Mount Majang as a vital sporting and touristic asset.

Athletes like Godlove Gabsebuin and Adamu Irine have proven that the region is a breeding ground for world-class talent. With proper recognition, the Mount Majang Race could elevate Cameroon’s athletic profile and attract much-needed tourism to the region, paving the way for more support and investment.

A Gathering of Resilience and Spirit

As Mbem prepares for the Mount Majang Race, the event promises to be a powerful reminder of the village’s resilience, its vibrant cultural heritage, and the unwavering spirit of its people. This year, as in years past, the race will bring together sons and daughters of Mbem, along with visitors from across the country, in a grand celebration of unity, tradition, and athletic excellence.

For those who will brave the challenging slopes of Mount Majang, the race will be a testament to their strength, determination, and unbreakable spirit—a fitting tribute to a village that stands tall, much like its iconic mountain.

The 2024 Mount Majang Race is poised to be an unforgettable spectacle that will leave an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who participate and witness the historic event.
